Coming up with a plan to ensure you’re ready to face natural disasters and other emergencies with your pets doesn’t require much time, but it could save your furry friend’s life. Know Where to Go

When you need to evacuate to escape a natural disaster or another emergency, you don’t have time to figure out where to go. Every second counts in these situations, so it just makes sense to do your research beforehand. Decide where you will go, and search for pet-friendly hotels. If you have friends or family in the area, talk to them and ask if you and your pet(s) could go there in an emergency. Keep a list of locations and contact information in your emergency kit. This brings us to our next tip: 

Assemble an Emergency Kit

If disaster strikes, you may not have time to gather your pet’s food, treats, medications, etc. Making a kit ahead of time ensures that everything you’ll need in an emergency is in one place. Your pet’s kit should include a few days worth of food and bottled water, dishes, medication, copies of veterinary records, a well-stocked first aid kit, an extra leash and collar, and a few of their favorite toys or treats. Keep it in a convenient, accessible location where you’ll be able to grab it quickly if you need to evacuate or use the supplies inside to care for your pet. 

Make Sure They Have Identification

Keep a collar and identification tag with up-to-date information on your pet at all times. Consider having them microchipped, too. The process is non-surgical, causes minimal discomfort, and takes just a few seconds. And once chipped, your furry friend will have lifetime identification. Just remember to update the information if you change your phone number or move.
